The Green Garland of Telengana

The city of Hyderabad in Telangana, India, was announced as the grand winner of the prestigious ‘World Green City Award 2022’ by AIPH. The inaugural Awards ceremony took place on 14 October 2022 at the IUCN Leaders Forum held in Jeju, Republic of Korea. The Grand Winner was announced from the list of six winning cities, all of which received the title of “Category Winner” across the six award categories. Hyderabad was declared as the recipient of the highest and most coveted accolade for the initiative entitled Telangana Ku Haritha Haram meaning ‘Green Garland to the State of Telangana’. This flagship programme inspired large-scale tree-planting by the Government of Telangana since 2015-16. The programme was established with the aim of increasing the tree cover of the State from the current 24 per cent to 33 per cent of its total geographical area. They surpassed this goal with an ultimate increase of 147 percent through the initiative.
